"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore is not an act but a habit." Aristotle (Greek philosopher and polymath)
Welcome to Year 6
Our question for Term 1 is, ‘How have inventions changed the world?’. The children will be learning about the impact of inventions and questioning the reasons for their creation. The children will be comparing different historical periods and displaying their knowledge on a timeline, building on their knowledge of the previous historical eras they have studied and learning to use primary and secondary sources in their research. In science, children will be learning about electricity and the components of a working circuit. In English, we will be writing a fictional retelling of a story based on an inventor. They will then produce a non-chronological report based on the story. In History, we will be looking at different inventions throughout time, analysing the significance of each and what impact they have made on the world.
Inspirational people we will be looking at include:
- Jonnie Peacock -a world and paralympic champion and Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
- Richard Turere - Kenyan inventor - inventor of ‘lion lights’ to help keep livestock safe.
- Nikola Tesla - scientist and inventor (electricity).
- Hedy Lamarr - Hollywood actor who invented a remote control communication device, which influenced bluetooth and wifi systems.
